What was planned to be a reminiscing trending topic on twitter for black people in South Africa - turned out to be something else for the Americans. What was worse is that twitter removed the TT without doing research why it was there in the beginning - this article explains it better than I do ... continue

  1. they blew this way out of propotion

  2. yeah! American people are ignorant. they shouldve sourced why was it there to begin with and why black people were tagging #thisdarkiessay

Someone said something interesting "that they dont know much about African and they call themselves Africans"

  3. Americans didn't overe-act. They reacted to an offensive word being used.

Just because you are not offended by the word/phrase, does not mean it is not offensive.

It disappoints me that, 'black' South Africans fail to see what the African Americans were reacting too.

Considering how far with have come, we can do better, in accommodating, understanding and showing compassion to others.

*before I get lambasted please read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface --- then you might see where they are coming from.

On the real, it is BIZARRE, to say the least, that South Africans were offended by the Americans being offended. Just because you are too f'd up to know that "darkie" is offensive, it does not mean it is not. Let's get real here. It's embarassing, to say the least. Don't call ME darkie, thanks! It's backward!

  5. i think its in the context - we both [USA & SA] came from different perspective. If they read what was said before maybe it wouldve turned out different

For both groups, the context and the origin is racism. The changing of the meaning or the forgetting of the past, will never change the past. That's what they are reacting to. You'd think this would be quite CLEAR! Yeeessh! You just wait until your white boss goes, "Please come into my office, Darkie!"

  7. i saw people reminiscing about stuff black people say ...

  8. I feel you Lebogang, but for how long are we going to be offended by the K & N & D word, are we not past that already, personally I think it's imbrassing our past, I would understand if my Grandfather felt offended, but not the now gen, we will not move on unless we imbrace these things.

I think ppl need 2 understand that it’s about taking the POWER OUT THE WORD and not about the word itself. People keep askin how we can say we’ve moved forward if we still use the word Darkie. It’s not going 2 disappear, it will remain in my vocab and I am no offended by it. That is moving forward, not trying to cover it up. The point of the TT was to reminisce about the funny things (yes most of our self made words are hilarious) that black South Africans use. It’s my lingo. It’s my culture. It’s a part of who I am. I’m soooo proud 2 say that because I am a proud black South African

  10. @KPM:

    ... forever.

  13. .... arggggg --- amma leave this (pseudo) 'argument', with this:

A word/phrase is offensive not because of the person that said it, but the person that heard it. *why is this not understood? - http://twitter.com/lebogang_nkoane/status/5427597461

and if that does not make sense, then I have nothing to argue here.

    *(disgracefully) bows out.

  14. After all these years of liberation we cannot still be bitter!!!
