Yesterday we had an interesting topic [on twitter] about black people owning media. Most [actually I think its all, but I stand to be corrected] black magazines are not owned by blacks; there ones that are owned by blacks always go under [I can only assume its because of mis-management and finance]. The question is how do we change this and own media?

had a look at the management of some of the main players in the media industry:

    KAGISO MEDIA
CEO: Murphy Morobe CFO: Patrick Kane
    Company Secretary (CS): Dumisani Mtshali
    Chairperson: R. Motanyane
    Dep. Chair: J Nyeke

    CAXTON
CEO: Terrance Moolman MD: Gordon Utian
    deputy MD: Petrus Greyling
    CS: Navon Sooka
    Chairperson: Frederick van Zyl Slabbert

    AVUSA
CEO: Prakash Desai CFO: Howard Benatar
CS: Joanne Matisonn Chairman: Dumisa Ntsebeza
    Non-Executive Director: Yolanda Cuba

    NASPERS
CEO: Koos Bekker CFO: Steve Pacak
CS: Gillian Kisbey-Green Chairman: Ton Vosloo

couldn't get the info on Ndalo Media although like Kagiso, its mostly if not entirely black owned. So i guess we still got a long way to go.

Avusa was the worst acquisition made by Mvela...

the again, i'll keep that out the topic...

media in SA needs to be reinvented - we cant stick to old ways of doing things and we dont have enough entrepreneurs to even begin to tackle the problem. then there's access to finance... we will continue to see the same people in media (or other industries for that matter) simply because they geared up and are not even looking back.

there is no culture of venture capitalism in SA, and any semblance of such activity is mainly for those who already have access to finance.

Chimurenga is not yet here... not yet uhuru... aluta continua...

we are so far from the mark.. we're not even a third of the way... they still call us the "emerging market" masked with that silly term "Black Diamond" all it mean is - no money. no real money anyway...
