So we have been looking for young directors and this is what we found - Thabang Moleya, we asked him a couple of questions and her answered as follows...

Q: Who is Thabang Moleya?

An up and coming director/filmmaker who wants to make a difference in the South Africa film industry. Passionate about telling stories,
Photography and painting. ART is my life, in many forms, it’s just that
with movie making one can manipulate an audiences emotions and create worlds and people that didn't exist. Inspired by my mother and driven passionately by the belief of being Gods instrument in the greater plan of life.

Q: Why did you choose Directing? and did you study for it or its
driving by passion?

I wouldn't say I chose directing. Directing chose me. It’s a voice
inside you, one can’t be trained for this; you’re born with in and in
time you learn how to articulate yourself through images, through
characters, through telling stories: from commercials to drama series
to feature films. I studied in Cape-Town at City Varsity and was
guided by Tim Spring and Roy Zetisky.

Q: What have you worked on so far?

I have so far directed, JOZI-H, JACOBS CROSS, THE LAB, SOKHULU AND PARTNERS (IEMMY NOMINATED FOR DRAMA SERIES 2009, WINNER OF BEST DRAMA SERIES AT SAFTA'S 2010) and many other short films, which I have written, produced and directed. My focus now after doing some of the greatest drama series work in South Africa, is the commercials world. Telling stories in 30-45 seconds, working with agencies and clients and mastering the commercials realm like I have done with drama series thus far. I’m currently one of the two directors at THE BOMB SHELTER and we plan on winning many more awards to add to the commercials collection.

Q: Where are you from and how has that influenced you in to directing?

I’m from a township called Tembisa. Born and raised there. Many of my childhood memories are there, the sweet innocent days of growing up without realizing what your country is fighting for.  When you want to connect with yourself and find the roots of your stories sometimes thinking of home can inspire, scenes, characters and situations which you then translate into the story your telling.

Q: Who do you rate a great director in South Africa?

The best director in South Africa without a doubt is Teboho Mahlatsi. One of the creators of YIZO-YIZO and ZONE 14, a remarkable man, humble, dedicated and ruthlessly passionate about the craft of filmmaking. An amazing commercials director: his awards do prove that. I look up to him. He inspires me.

Like how he considers himself up and coming although he's directed shows on some of South Africa's best series and he has an Emmy nomination under his belt... Modesty is always a good look!

  8. Yeah ... well you know what they say - you are as good as your last work.
