  1. It is better than the last one — a change in the right direction, but not quite there yet.

I'd peg the style around bluenote record label album covers, viz.: http://studio83.co.za/news/2010/07/01/2111

Why, I hear you ask? Well I don't think this current design is sustainable (as in it won't play well in future edition). I can see this as part of the magazine 'layout design'.

Also, the photography, doesn't bring about: "a friend of mine", type of thing, if that makes any sense. I'd go with not so-dark photography, something lighter yet serious (or contemplated).

    A reflective type style.

  2. What I am trying to say is, Marvin, IMHO, is not Sizwe Dhlomo, although Sizwe might appeal to him, but he (Marvin) is more of an accomplished gentleman (emphasis on this) who sits at the back o' the club sippin' Cognac (or a Black Label Draught), but will not buy a Ferrari (even if he could afford it), he would rather back-pack through South-East Asia,,,

So, he ain't a 'flashy-look-at-me-type' o' fella, but he jams to Fela Kuti, and he carries his life in that manner: those who know, go know." (as Fela would put it).

I'd say Q-Tip could fit the bill, but Common (the sober Common anyway)/Khanye/Jay-Z/BlackThought wouldn't cut it.

If any of this makes sense.

  3. I hear you and your comments make sense [and i agree its better than the last one] - i dont think i will post the next Marvin cover/layout until its ready to drop ... i think in time like the other magazines it will evolve on its own - in its own time ...

  4. lol, don't be afraid to share — its caring, these comments.

    :)

  5. Yes i know - but feel like we are running out of time ... Marvin will get its own mood or feel when the time is right - organically

  6. Okay.

Aside: this cover looks the dude is being interrogated by the police and the dialogue goes like this (humour me):

Police Officer: So who is Marvin?
Suspect: Marvin. Is a friend of mine.

(and that becomes a headline on the wires: tv, radio, news papers) — hmm, that could be another way to run with it: where Marvin is represented through others, others that have been 'influence, inspired' by Marvin.

    ;-)

When I think Marvin I think of a guy who looks & smells good has a killer smile and promises to taste even better.

You see him walking into a bar/pub/whatever then you dont see him again the whole time you're there...

thats the kinda feel I would like to get from the mag and its cover.

I think you should use an unknown model coz when I saw Choc my mind went into cream cartel mode...

  8. Remeber that Marvin is cool, so everyone wants to know him ... even Choc.

but Choc is not Marvin cool he's more like Souljah boy/high school kids in multi-coloured clothing cool. i think Marvin is Don Draper cool from Mad Men.

  10. I agree with Bugzy and Mosa.

Yes, an unknown model/face is important. A known face tends to set the tone based on my perception of that face/person and that won't be good.

  11. Marvin will never be on the cover - but it will be the people he finds interesting ... the under dogs / gentlemen / travellers / scientists etc. I dont think Marvin will avoid assciating himself with someone becoz they are famous [thats being narrow minded, i think] - now what if he discoveres someone cool and he doesnt know that he is famous?. Its interesting what expectations lies ahead for Marvin - and im sure he will meet non of them - coz if he does then whats the point?

I'll reinforce what's been said above that I agree with. I like the Blue Note cover feel, it has a sustainability thing about it that Lebogang mentions, as in you can run with it from one cover to the next. I also like the "not famous" approach, the guy who comes in and when he's gone everyone is like "who the FUCK was THAT!?!" The unassuming but impactful(f7) type o' guy! An old soul with a youthful presence! Ok, I think that should do it for now. (2c)

  14. I hear you Matome - interms of "not famous" approach - i think it should be both - Marvin shouldnt make a decision base on fame when it come to the covers. If he thinks the guy is cool ... then he should be on the cover regardless of fame.
