I have a friend who has a somewhat stalkerish obsession with Angelina Jolie. I'm pretty sure it has to do with her extraordinary lips and her large family than her acting ability.
Angelina may have done justice to her psychopathic Girl, Interrupted character, Lisa Rowe, but of late (maybe every movie after her Oscar winning performance <<< Big generalisation. She also has deep films such as changeling, A Mighty Heart, etc), she winded down to become the female action star. The typical CIA or FBI agent, trying to clear her name (Salt) or trying to complete her assignment of whacking someone (Mr and Mrs Smith).
Perhaps you can tell that I'm not much of a fan of Angelina Jolie. But from what I've seen on the synopsis and the trailer of her new film, The Tourist, it is another one of those movies, described above, except, this time she seems to be the "bad guy" spy. (Note: Spy is the common factor, here)
Feminists may lash at me for not support fellow sister in the male-dominated genre of Action. It's not like Denzel's repetitive superhero/cop characters are get anymore interesting with each movie. Typecasting limits creative freedom. And I understand that individuals need to make money, but on the case of such A-listers, surely they can afford to branch into something new(?) But these could also just be the actors' strengths.
Anyways, I will eventually watch The Tourist, as I have watched Titanic 2 (Yes, really.) And it has Johnny Depp who has also typecast himself in the quirky world of Tim Burton, but now is doing something different to pay the bills with this film.
The Tourist comes to theatres on Jan 7th, 2011.
