Other than the dire need to get myself my own griot, watching Sunjata at the Market Theatre resurrected in me, the love of African dress, and particularly the Grand Boubou, worn by men in West African countries like Mali, Ghana and Nigeria.

This wide-sleeved robe is known by a variety of names depending on the ethnic tribe wearing it, and has strong roots in the Arabic cultures, with Islamic influences.

Sunjata is an amazing Malian story, adapted and directred by James Ngcobo, at the Market Theatre until 6 March.
