Hello and Welcome to the first 158 Fridays first interview for 2012, Can you please tell us a bit about Purplebird and 75 before I can ask you further questions :
Thanks for having me. Puplebird and 75 are platforms that I use to exhibit my photography. I also get a lot of my inspiration from fellow users.
Who are you, where were you raised? what school did you attend and how did that influence you get into the creative industry:
I’m a 21-year-old creative, I work as a Graphic Designer at Mohlaleng Media / 76 Motherussia and I have a passion for photography. Secretly, I wish to be a lead singer of a band, even though I can’t sing to save my life, but I still keep hope alive. I was born and raised in Soweto, White City Jabavu by my mother and grandmother. In 1996, my mother, my sister and I moved to Ennerdale. I attended my primary schooling at Meredale Primary, high school I went to Fred Norman High, and I studied Graphic Design at the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) for three years. I remember in grade 10, I fell in love with Graphic Design, I heard about it and I knew that was the career I was going to follow.
How would you describe your style of photography, I have noticed you shoot a lot of portraits in almost all your graphs:
I try to explore many styles and techniques, that way I learn how to apply myself in any style and make it work for me. Really for me, the exciting part is being able to capture a moment as I see it and share it with the world.
What kind of camera kit do you use on 75 :
I’m using a Canon EOS 400D Digital 2011
In terms of your work ( Photogoraphy and Design ), How do you approach it, I know you are sensitive about your shit?
Lol, indeed I am sensitive about my shit. How I approach my work, first make it my mission to fully understand what it is that is required of me, that way; the end result I can justify in a way that will make sense to the person receiving it. I am in a business where I am constantly designing for the next person, so this also helps me explore different backgrounds, traditions, cultures and systems.
What would you do to improve your skills as a photographer or are you happy with you current knowledge:
I’m planning on taking a course in photography; I am that serious about it. I know there is mountain of knowledge on photography that I have not yet been exposed to and I’d like to discover that world. In between my hectic work schedule, I am going to find the time to further my photography knowledge. I am though, learning a whole lot from graphers on 75, who would post up techniques of how they achieved certain executions.
What advice would you give to an aspiring photographer:
Firstly, I’d advise him/her to get a camera. There is no greater way to learn something than by experiencing it first hand. Have passion for it, for anything you want to do, that way you will excel. Do not be afraid to seek knowledge, read books, travel, be social, humble yourself and absorb as much information as you possibly can. Teach the next person; you may discover something new yourself (just act like you’ve always known).
I heard through the grapevine that your boyfriend is a creative also, do you mind telling us more about you guys work or inspire each other:
Lol, yes, I’m dating Nkululeko Cekiso, he’s an Animator, Illustrator, beat-maker. We have quit a few projects that we’re working on that involve design, animation, music and photography. All is still on the DL but this year, we plan to put our work out there. He inspires me on a daily, he’s very creative and is fantastic at drawing.
What other projects are you involved in besides design, photography and music?
None as yet, all projects that I’m involved in include either design or photography.
Thank you for your time Lunkss and thank you reader for reading, till next week's post. Ciao for now
